"Scary" by Erica

Erica's original album art for "Scary"

One of my very good friends, Erica Patrick, also happens to be a budding 17-year-old bedroom pop sensation. She first started sharing covers on YouTube back in middle school on her channel erica & frankie, however now she mainly writes her own original songs. Apart from singing, she also plays trumpet in band and jazz band at school, guitar, piano, and a little bit of everything else. If you ask her to pick up an instrument she’s never played before, she’ll no doubt manage to do something cool with it. She’s played just about every genre out there, in one way or another. From soft acoustic covers to jazz vocal solos, to grunge and rock in our ninth-grade band Fairfield (shoutout to Ellis and Cam lol). She released her first full-length album titled reflections in 2019 and has released several more singles since. On top of writing and recording all of her original music, she also does the album art.

Her latest release, a song titled “Scary”, was inspired by the fear and pressure she’s been feeling surrounding the future and what it holds. She wanted to write a song centered around the idea of uncertainty and the fear that comes with it, as she expressed to me that she knows a lot of people can relate to this. Especially right now, with the whole world being in the midst of a pandemic.

“It focuses on how dreadful uncertainty can feel. It’s like, I just want someone to tell me all the steps, to tell me how to get from point A to point B again like they used to, but now I’m expected to know exactly where I’m going and how to get there on my own. The last year of high school is always a year of change, which is something that really scares me (as a grade 12 student), since I tend to get settled into routine and comfortable knowns.”

- Erica (on her new song)

So do yourself a favor, and listen to “Scary” by Erica Patrick (who goes by “erica” on music streaming platforms). It’s available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc)!
